What Is a TDI Windstorm Inspection?
The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) requires windstorm inspections for properties in designated catastrophe areas along the Texas Gulf Coast. These inspections verify that construction meets the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) building code requirements for wind resistance. Without a TDI inspection and compliance certificate, you cannot obtain TWIA windstorm insurance โ which is often the only available wind coverage in coastal areas.
Who Needs a Windstorm Inspection?
TDI windstorm inspections are required for new construction, additions, renovations, and re-roofing in the designated catastrophe areas along the Texas coast โ generally from Beaumont south to Brownsville, including Galveston, Corpus Christi, and the entire barrier island chain. If your property is in a Tier 1 or Tier 2 windstorm area, you need TDI compliance for TWIA insurance and building permits.
What Does a Windstorm Inspection Check?
A TDI windstorm inspection evaluates the wind-resistant features of your building. This includes roof deck attachment and fastening, roof-to-wall connections (hurricane straps), wall-to-foundation connections, window and door impact ratings or shutters, roof covering and underlayment, and overall structural tie-down. The inspector documents compliance with the applicable building code wind provisions and issues a certificate of compliance if the building passes.
Wind-Load Engineering for New Construction
For new construction in coastal areas, wind-load engineering is required as part of the structural design. Our licensed engineers perform wind-load calculations per IBC and IRC standards, design structural connections, roof systems, and wall bracing that meet or exceed wind resistance requirements, and provide PE-stamped engineering for your building permit. We design for Texas Gulf Coast wind speeds, which can reach 150+ mph in design conditions. For new construction and retrofit projects, our windstorm engineering service handles the full wind-load design and TDI compliance process.
